Guntur is a major district of Coastal Andhra Pradesh, with Guntur city as its administrative headquarters. The modern district was formed on 1 October 1904, and its boundaries changed significantly in 2022 when the former larger Guntur district was reorganised into the present Guntur, Palnadu and Bapatla districts.
The current district includes Guntur city, Tenali, Ponnur, Mangalagiri, Tadepalle and the Thullur-Amaravati capital-region belt. It is known for chilli trading, paddy and tobacco cultivation, educational institutions, Mangalagiri handlooms, temples, birdlife and strong road and rail links with Vijayawada and the rest of Andhra Pradesh.
The current district portal records a population of 20,91,075, literacy of 74.15% and an urban population share of 54.80%. It gives the geographical area as 2,44,700 hectares, or about 2,447 sq. km.

There is an important data-cleaning issue on the official portal. The current English Mandals page correctly lists 18 mandals, but a Telugu mandal page still contains the former undivided Guntur district structure. Similarly, the live Village & Panchayats page claims 1,022 Gram Panchayats, which is a legacy total and is incompatible with the present 18-mandal district. Later Panchayat Raj recategorisation material lists 257 Gram Panchayats for Guntur, while the Government District Survey Report records 226 revenue villages.
Location of Guntur District
Guntur lies in central Coastal Andhra Pradesh, immediately south and west of the Krishna River and close to Vijayawada. The current district administration places Krishna district to the north, Palnadu district to the west, Bapatla district to the south and the Krishna River along the eastern boundary.
The district forms part of the fertile Krishna basin and contains both highly urbanised corridors and intensively cultivated rural areas. Guntur is particularly famous as a chilli-trading centre. Paddy, tobacco, cotton and chillies are among the important agricultural products associated with the district.
Mangalagiri is also famous for handloom sarees and fabrics. The Thullur-Tadepalle-Mangalagiri side forms an important part of the Andhra Pradesh capital-region development area.
Administration of Guntur District
Guntur city is the district headquarters. The present administration has two revenue divisions – Guntur and Tenali – containing 18 mandals.
Guntur Revenue Division

Tenali Revenue Division
- Mangalagiri

The current live Mandals page uses Guntur East and Guntur West. The 2023 District Survey Report uses the earlier labels Guntur Urban and Guntur Rural but otherwise confirms the same 18-mandal present-district structure and 226 revenue villages.
Older pages that list Amaravathi, Sattenapalli, Narasaraopet, Bapatla and numerous other mandals are displaying the boundaries of the former undivided district and should not be used for current district statistics.
Urban Local Bodies
The main present-day urban bodies are:
- Guntur Municipal Corporation
- Mangalagiri-Tadepalli Municipal Corporation
- Tenali Municipality
- Ponnur Municipality
The current Guntur portal confirms Guntur Municipal Corporation, while current municipal and electoral records continue to identify Tenali, Ponnur and Mangalagiri-Tadepalli as the other major urban bodies in the present district.
Guntur is the largest city and administrative centre. Mangalagiri-Tadepalli forms an important part of the Vijayawada-Amaravati urban corridor, while Tenali and Ponnur serve large agricultural and commercial areas in the southern part of the district.
Guntur District Court
The principal judicial establishment is the District and Sessions Court at Guntur. The Andhra Pradesh State Legal Services Authority lists the District Legal Services Authority at Nyaya Seva Sadan, District Court Buildings, Guntur.

Citizens can use the official eCourts system to check case status, hearing dates, cause lists, orders and CNR numbers. Separate judicial establishments serve locations such as Tenali, Ponnur and Mangalagiri, so the exact court should be checked before travelling.
Guntur Junction Railway Station
Guntur Junction is the principal railway station for the district headquarters.
Railway Station Code: GNT
Indian Railways lists Guntur Junction as an NSG-3 station under South Central Railway’s Guntur Division.
It is an important railway junction with routes towards Vijayawada, Tenali, Nallapadu, Narasaraopet and other parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Guntur has strong road connectivity with Vijayawada, Amaravati, Tenali, Ponnur and other parts of Andhra Pradesh.
